HC Deb 01 May 1985 vol 78 c144W
Mr. Arnold

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what information he has about the number of local enterprise companies established by local authorities; and if he will make a statement.

Sir George Young

Local authorities normally establish and fund enterprise boards using their discretionary powers. There is no statutory requirement to notify my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State of their action and my Department does not therefore maintain a comprehensive record of the number of such boards in existence.

Of the 144 established local enterprise agencies in England listed by Business in the Community in September 1984, 118 had one or more local authorities listed among their sponsors.
