§ Mr. Nicholas Bakerasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what action he is taking to check the import of meat products from Spain and Belgium in the light of the nine confirmed outbreaks of African swine fever in Belgium close to the Dutch border.
§ Mrs. Fenner[pursuant to her reply, 28 March 1985]: We introduced an immediate ban on imports from Belgium of pigmeat products which might give rise to risk when the first outbreaks of African swine fever were confirmed in that country. Subsequently, when the situation became clearer, all member states of the European Community agreed on co-ordinated action on similar lines in relation to the affected area. Imports from other parts of Belgium are subject to checks at the ports of entry.
Imports of pigmeat and pigmeat products from Spain were already banned for other animal health reasons.
