§ Mr. Coombsasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what plans he has to reduce the number of foods which are required to meet compositional standards.
§ Mrs. FennerIt is the Government's intention to continue to move towards more informative food labelling so as to allow for a wide consumer choice of foods. This does not mean however that all food compositional standards are likely to disappear.
§ Mr. Coombsasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food when he expects to update his Department's manual of nutrition, so as to reflect the recommendations of the Committee on Medical Aspects of Food Policy report.
§ Mrs. FennerMy Department plans to publish the new ninth edition of the "Manual of Nutrition", which is aimed at teachers and students of nutrition, in time for the academic year starting in September 1985. The ninth edition will include advice based on the recommendations of the recent COMA report on diet and cardiovascular disease along with other updated information.
§ Mr. Coombsasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what is his national food policy.
§ Mrs. FennerOur policy is to ensure the provision of adequate supplies of wholesome food, and to this end to foster in the United Kingdom efficient and competitive agriculture, fisheries and food processing and distribution industries. I am particularly concerned to encourage improvements in the quality, presentation and marketing of British food both at home and abroad. It was to achieve this that the Government set up Food From Britain.
