HC Deb 27 March 1985 vol 76 cc210-1W
Mr. Brandon-Bravo

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the cost per pupil for rate support grant purposes in Nottinghamshire for (a) primary, (b) secondary under 16 years and (c) secondary over 16 years, in the current and projected financial years; what are the highest, lowest and average costs in these three categories nationally; and what added percentage should be allowed for building maintenance and central establishment costs, to establish the total cost of education in the maintained sector.

Mr. Dunn

The unit grant-related expenditure associated with pupils in each age group is as follows:

1984–85 1985–86
5–10 (Primary) £ cash
Nottinghamshire 845 943
Highest (Brent) 1,051 1,174
Lowest (Stockport) 804 897
Average 863 963
11–15
(Secondary) £ cash
Nottinghamshire 1,073 1,155
Highest (Brent) 1,344 1,448
Lowest (Stockport) 1,027 1,107
Average 1,094 1178
16+
(Secondary) £ cash
Nottinghamshire 1,778 1,872
Highest (Newham) 1,927 2,052
Lowest (Stockport) 1,732 1,818
Average 1,795 1,888

The grant-related expenditure assessed by the Government includes allowance for the costs of special schools; central administration; school transport; child guidance; pupil support; and for current expenditure on buildings maintenance. It does not include the cost of school meals and milk, or of the revenue consequences of capital expenditure which are dealt with separately in GREs. An addition of some 13 per cent. to the figures above for these two items would give the total cost of education in the maintained sector as assessed by the Government.
