Mr. Hancock

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what percentage change there has been in the student-staff ratio in the polytechnics aver the period 1975 to 1984.

Mr. Brooke

The percentage change in the student-staff ratio (SSR) for advanced level work in the polytechnics between 1974–75 and 1983–84 was as follows:

The ratios are calculated as full-time equivalent student load divided by the full-time equivalent number of lecturers who are involved in teaching.

The percentage change in the student-staff ratio (SSR) in universities in Great Britain between December 1975 and December 1983, the latter date for which information is available, was as follows:

This ratio is defined as the full-time equivalent of undergraduate and postgraduate students divided by full-time academic staff funded wholly from university funds.
