The change from borstal sentences to youth custody sentences took place on 24 May 1983, when Part I of the Criminal Justice Act 1982, was implemented. The figures in the table before and after that date are not directly comparable, because of changes in the designation of accommodation which occurred about that time: in particular most young prisoner centres as well as borstals became youth custody centres.
