Mr. Teddy Taylor

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the total amount paid by the United Kingdom to the European Economic Community and the total amount received by the United Kingdom in grant during the calendar year 1984.

Mr. Ian Stewart

Payments to the European Community in 1984 total £3,259 million. Receipts including refunds total £2,537 million.

Mr. Teddy Taylor

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer by what sum the total contributions and payments made by the United Kingdom to the Common Market since 1 January 1973 have exceeded the grants and subsidies received by the United Kingdom from that body over the entire period; and if he will express the net sum as an amount per day of membership.

Mr. Ian Stewart

Net payments in the period 1 January 1973 to 31 December 1984 amounted to £5,458 million. This is about £1.245 million a day since accession.
