§ Mr. Cabornasked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will provide information concerning the attendance of British military attaches at South African military exercises for the years 1979 to 1985 inclusive and give the name of the exercise, the date of the exercise, the venue of the exercise and the names of military attachés attending for each exercise.
§ Mr. StanleyBritish military attachés have attended only one South African military exercise during the period 1979 to 1985 inclusive. This was Exercise Thunder Chariot, held in September 1984 at Lohatla in northern Cape Province. The British defence attaché (Colonel D. W. Hanson, OBE) and the naval air attaché (Group Captain G. L. Gridley, OBE, RAF) attended for one day only, along with attaches from other countries, as observers.
