asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is the number of awards of industrial death benefit which have been made for the years 1982, 1983 and 1984, for:

  1. (a) asbestosis
  2. 161
  3. (b) diffuse mesothelioma of pleura or peritoneum.
  4. (c) lung cancer accompanied by asbestosis.
  5. (d) lung cancer without abestosis.

The table shows the number of awards of industrial death benefit for (a) asbestosis as at 31st December 1984 and (b) diffuse mesothelioma as at 31st March 1984, relating to deaths in 1982, 1983 and 1984. The figures are the latest available. (Further awards for deaths from diffuse mesothelioma in 1982 and 1983 may have been made in 1984.)

† (d) Lung cancer without asbestosis is not prescribed for asbestos workers under the Industrial Injuries Provisions of the 1975 Social Security Act.
*Figures for pneumoconiosis (asbestosis) where lung cancer is also present are not available centrally and could be obtained only at disproportionate cost.
†Lung cancer when accompanied by bilateral diffuse pleural thickening will he added to the list of prescribed diseases under the industrial injuries provisions of the Social Security Act 1975 with effect from 1st April 1985.
