§ Mr. John PattenThe number of staff employed in the headquarters unit of the Department was reduced by 19 per cent. between 1979 and 1984 from 6,675 on 1 April 1979 to 5,384 on 1 April 1984. This compares with an overall reduction of 14 per cent. in Civil Service manpower during the same period.
