asked Her Majesty's Government:

What are the maximum allowances at present for Members of the Northern Ireland Assembly, and what is the average amount claimed by each Member.

Lord Lyell

Assembly Members are eligible for the following allowances in addition to their salaries:

Travel:

  1. (i) Reimbursement of actual cost of fare for journeys by rail or bus, or by sea to Rathlin Island.
  2. (ii) Reimbursement for journeys by motor vehicle other than bus or motor cycle, as follows: 27p per mile for first 10,000 miles in each financial year; 16p per mile for further mileage.
  3. (iii) Reimbursement for journeys by motor cycle, as follows: engine capacity less than 150cc 6.4p per mile; engine capacity more than 150cc but less than 250cc 8.6p per mile; engine capacity more than 250cc 12.7p per mile.

Secretarial and Research: (iv) A maximum of £7,462 per annum to defray expenses incurred on secretarial assistance in carrying out official duties.

The average amount claimed by each Member from the start of the Assembly in October 1982 to 31st January is as follows:
