Mr. Tony Lloyd

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list for each year from 1973 to date, the numbers of (a) deportation notices served by the Greater Manchester police, (b) deportations enforced by the Greater Manchester police and country where sent, (c) illegal immigrants removed by police, and country where sent, (d) persons held in Strangeways, Risley and Styal awaiting deportation or removal, with length of times held in custody, (e) people prosecuted for Immigration Act offences broken down into offences after being charged by the Greater Manchester police, with numbers of cases where court recommends deportation and numbers of cases where his Department agrees to the recommendation and (f) people interviewed by the immigration department at Ringway in connection with their immigration status having once entered the United Kingdom, specifying how many of these were in connection with (i) marriage and (ii) political asylum.

I regret that information on(a), (b), (d), and (e) is not readily available.

With regard to (c), illegal entrants are removed under directions given by an immigration officer and the police are not normally involved in these arrangements. The numbers of illegal entrants whose removal has been directed by the immigration service at Manchester since 1973 are:
