HC Deb 08 March 1985 vol 74 c636W
Mrs. Peacock

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many representations he has received proposing the extension of the limited relief from value added tax given to registered charities.

Mr. Hayhoe

During the last three months my Treasury colleagues and I have received a total of 56 representations from individuals and organisations regarding extension of VAT relief for charities. I met a deputation from the Charities VAT Reform Group on 4 December.

Mr. Tom Cox

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the total amount of value added tax paid by charitable organisations on the income received by them in each of the last five years.

Mr. Hayhoe

This information is not available. Charities which engage in business activities must register for VAT and charge VAT on their supplies in the same way as other enterprises. Non-business income is not liable to VAT.
