HC Deb 07 March 1985 vol 74 c568W
Mr. Body

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he will list the countries in the European Economic Community which require by law all dairy farmers to use an organophosphorous compound as the exclusive method of controlling warble fly.

Mrs. Fenner

Comprehensive information on the legal position in other member states could be obtained only by detailed and expensive inquiries. However, from information available to us, the following is our understanding of the situation.

The Republic of Ireland is the only other Community country with a national eradication campaign. Compulsory dressing with a systemic treatment, including organophosphorous compounds, is a requirement where infestation is found. In Germany, infected herds are required to be treated in the spring and autumn using a systemic dressing. In France, the Netherlands and Italy there are regional schemes where there is compulsory treatment using approved organophosphorous dressings. Neither Belgium nor Greece has a control programme, but voluntary systemic treatments are encouraged, Denmark is free from warble fly infestations.
