HC Deb 07 March 1985 vol 74 c533W
Mr. Alfred Morris

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will take steps to ensure that British sign language is introduced as a major language option in schools.

Mr. Dunn

There is considerable divergence of opinion among experts as to whether British sign language should be regarded as a language or a system of communication. In the circumstances, it would be inappropriate for my right hon. Friend to take a particular stance on its introduction into the school curriculum.

Mr. Alfred Morris

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what information he has as to which mainstream schools and further education colleges have teachers or pupils who can use British sign language.

Mr. Dunn

This information is not collected centrally.
