Mr. Allan Roberts

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what guidance he issues to service men and women about the rights and restrictions which currently apply to them regarding (a) the membership of political parties, attendance at party branch meetings and active involvement in party affairs, (b) the membership of campaign and pressure groups, attendance at campaign and pressure group internal meetings and active involvement in campaign and pressure group internal affairs, (c) the membership of trade unions, attendance at union branch meetings and active involvement in union affairs, (d) participation in political marches, demonstrations, rallies, public meetings and the signing of public petitions and (e) writing letters to the press on (i) subjects related to defence policy and (ii) subjects of general public interest other than defence policy; and if he has any proposals to vary or to carry out a review of such rights and regulations.
