HC Deb 07 March 1985 vol 74 c595W
Ms. Harman

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he plans to take any action to protect residents in private residential care homes where the fees of these homes increase above the limits provided by payments from his Department.

Mr. Whitney

Supplementary benefit payments to people in all forms of board and lodging accommodation have always been subject to limits and that will remain the case when a new system of limits is introduced shortly following consultation through the social security advisory committee. As part of these changes, there will be generous transitional protection arrangements for existing claimants whose current charges are being met above the new limits. The consultative document contains no proposals to protect charges which increase above the new limits.
