HC Deb 07 March 1985 vol 74 cc581-2W
Mr. Campbell-Savours

asked the Secretary of State for Employment, pursuant to his reply of 14 February, Official Report, column 250, on what date the withdrawal of clearance for the pesticide dieldrin in products used by householders or by firms specialising in wood treatment in situ became effective.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

The withdrawal of clearance for the pesticide dieldrin in products used by householders or by firms specialising in wood treatment in situ became effective from 31 December 1984.

Mr. Campbell-Savours

asked the Secretaary of State for Employment if he will give a figure for the amount of dieldrin, as active ingredient, employed in pre-treatment of timbers, in each of the past five years for which figures are available.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

This information is not available.

Mr. Campbell-Savours

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if the use of dieldrin in any chemical used in any paint, lacquer, damp proofer or other preparation, apart from pre-treatment of timber, is still permitted.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

The use of dieldrin in paints or lacquers is permitted. To the best of our knowledge, dieldrin is not used in damp-proofing preparations.

Mr. Campbell-Savours

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if his Department intends to allow the continued use of dieldrin pesticide as long as existing stocks last.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

There are no plans to prevent the continued use of dieldrin.

Mr. Campbell-Savours

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many complaints regarding the misapplication or effects of wood treatment chemicalsand pesticides were made by the public and received by the Health and Safety Executive in each of the last five years for which figures are available; how many such cases were investigated and a report prepared; in how many cases a prosecution was initiated by the Health and Safety Executive under the Health and Safety at Work Act; and in how many such instances the prosecution was successful.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

A comprehensive central record is not kept of the information requested.
