HC Deb 07 March 1985 vol 74 cc552-3W
Mr. MacKenzie

asked the Prime Minister what was the total number of men, women and young people unemployed in each year from December 1978 to December 1984 in Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland, respectively.

The Prime Minister

The following table shows the information requested, in respect of total unemployed claimants. Comparisons are affected by the 1983 Budget provisions by which some men, mainly aged 60 years and over, no longer need to sign on in order to receive supplementary benefit or national insurance credits.

The second table shows the number of unemployed registrants aged under 18 years for January of each year from 1979 to 1982 (not available for December) and the number of unemployed claimants under 18 years for January of each year from 1982.
