Mr. Peter Bruinvels

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will call for reports from the relevant chief constables as to the number of persons injured in connection with the miners' dispute to the latest available date (a) from the beginning of the dispute and (b) since 1 January 1985.

Mr. Giles Shaw

Up to 5 March, 1,392 police officers had been injured while carrying out duties connected with the dispute, 96 of these injuries occurring since 3 January.

It is not possible to say how many members of the public have been injured because not all such injuries are reported to the police.

NOTES

(1) No figure is available for injuries sustained since 1 January itself.

(2) Where the same person has been injured on different occasions, more than one entry will have been made in the figures given.

Up to 26 February, 7,879 persons had been charged in connection with the dispute, 412 of those being charged since 8 January. It is not possible from the information available centrally to give the occupations of those charged.
