HC Deb 07 March 1985 vol 74 cc544-5W
Mr. Adley

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statment on the implication for the United Kingdom and the Western Alliance of New Zealand's decision to opt out of her obligations under ANZUS; and what steps he proposes to take.

Mr. Rifkind

Although the United Kingdom is not a signatory to the ANZUS treaty, we view with concern any disagreement between its members, all of whom are our friends and allies. We are also concerned at the effect of New Zealand policy on ship visits. We have made our views clear both to the New Zealand Government and to the others involved and are ready to take any opportunity to contribute to a resolution of these difficulties.
