HC Deb 05 March 1985 vol 74 cc484-5W
Sir Brandon Rhys Williams

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the cost in 1982–83 and 1983–84 of public service pensions including lump sum payments.

Mr. Peter Rees

The total expenditure on pension benefits including lump sums for the main public services, that is the civil service, local government, teachers, national health service, police, firemen and the armed forces, was for 1982–83 £4,330 million and for 1983–84 £4,850 million.

Sir Brandon Rhys Williams

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the estimated gross cost of paying public service pensions in the current year including lump sums; and what percentage this represents of the current cost of wages and salaries in relevant pensionable employment in the public sector.

Mr. Peter Rees

The estimated total expenditure in the current year (1984–85) on pension benefits including lump sums for the main public services, that is the civil service, local government, teachers, national health service, police, firemen and the armed forces, is £5,250 million. This is equivalent to approximately 17.6 per cent. of the estimated total pensionable pay of £29.8 billion for these services this year.
