HC Deb 05 March 1985 vol 74 c467W
59. Mr. Greenway

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what steps his Department is taking to encourage an increase in the number of qualified engineers; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Morrison

Securing an adequate supply of people, including qualified engineers, with up-to-date skills to meet the demands of new technology is one of the main objectives of the Government's adult training strategy. However, employers have the major responsibility for investing in the training of the people they require. The Government's financial support for adult training will concentrate increasingly on the Manpower Services Commission's pump-priming role and gives priority to those subjects related to new technology, including engineering.
