Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what grant has been paid to the Children's Legal Centre in each of the years since such funding commenced; what grant is expected to be paid in the forthcoming year; and for what purposes these funds are intended.

The Department has awarded the following grants to the Children's Legal Centre since its inception.

Grant Period Purpose
£9,500 for each of 3 years October 1980 to September 1983 To support a solicitor in providing advice to children, parents and professionals on children's matters which come within this Department's responsibilities.
£1,000 (capital grant) 1980 A contribution, arising from the appointment of a solicitor, towards the cost of office equipment.
£30,000 for each of 3 years October 1983 to September 1986 To support an advice/information service to children, parents and professionals on children's matters which come within this Department's responsibilities; the grant was not available for other areas of CLC's work, such as Childright.
£2,000 (one-off grant) March 1984 A contribution towards an analysis of a research project on reviews of children in care.
