HC Deb 05 March 1985 vol 74 cc500-5W
Mr. Chris Smith

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) what are the figures for the number of children who came into local authority care between 1 April 1982 and 31 March 1983, and between 1 April 1983 and 31 March 1984, because their families were homeless; and if he will give this information for England as a whole, Greater London, the metropolitan authorities, excluding London, the non-metropolitan authorities, and for each English local authority area;

(2) what are the latest available figures for the number of children in local authority care because their families are homeless; and if he will give this information for England as a whole, Greater London, the metropolitan authorities excluding London, non-metropolitan authorities and for each English local authority area.

Mr. John Patten

A child may be taken into care for a number of reasons, of which homelessness may be a contributory factor but is not identified as a specific cause. Given in the tables is information relating to the period between 1 April 1982 and 31 March 1983 and where available for the period 1 April 1983 to 31 March 1984, for the numbers of children in care, and the numbers of children who came into care where the specific cause was that their family had been made homeless. Figures have been given for each local authority, each metropolitan authority, Greater London and England.

Information given in table 1 relates to 31 March 1983 unless otherwise indicated.
