asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what information he has as to the average number of pupil contact hours per week by teachers in 1969, 1974, 1979 and 1984 in (a) primary and (b) secondary schools.

The average number of pupil contact hours per week by teachers in maintained primary schools in England in 1979 and 1984 are estimated to have 693 and 665 respectively. The correspondingly information for teachers in maintained secondary schools was 491 and 473. Comparable information for 1969 and 1974 is not available.
