HC Deb 04 March 1985 vol 74 cc353-4W
Mr. George Robertson

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry to what extent he has promoted overseas the quality assurance campaign; and what has been its extent.

Mr. Butcher

In its initial stages the national quality campaign has concentrated on increasing United Kingdom industry's awareness and use of sound quality management methods. This work has recently been extended to include activity aimed at inducing greater employee involvement in the pursuit of quality competitiveness. The programme as a whole is currently intended exclusively for United Kingdom consumption and no specific overseas promotional efforts are envisaged in the immediate future. However, the Department of Trade and Industry's register of quality assessed United Kingdom companies already offers home and overseas markets the growing evidence of United Kingdom quality capability.
