HC Deb 04 March 1985 vol 74 c394W
Mr. Best

asked the Prime Minister how, pursuant to her answer of 26 February, Official Report, column 133–34, the severe limitation on the amount of fluoride which could enter the water supply at any one time in the event of a malfunction in monitoring equipment is achieved; and if she will make a statement.

The Prime Minister

The amount of fluoride entering the supply at any one time is limited by the design of the dosing pump and the existence of a "day" tank with a maximum capacity of one day's supply. At sources which produce a steady flow of water, the pump operates near to its design capacity. At sources where the flow is variable a flow meter regulates the amount of fluoride. If the flow meter breaks down the dosing pump stops.
