HC Deb 04 March 1985 vol 74 c370W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what representations he has received from the French Government about United Kingdom membership of the European Organisation for Nuclear Research in Geneva and the salaries of British research staff there.

Mr. Brooke

None.

Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will list the cost-of-living bonuses which have been given to British researchers participating in the European Organisation for Nuclear Research.

Mr. Brooke

British members of the staff of the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) receive the same annual adjustments to their salaries as all CERN staff members of whatever nationality. The adjustments are decided by the Council of CERN, taking into account an annual index which is determined by increases in the cost of living in Geneva and any real net increases in local and central government salaries in Switzerland. In the last four years, these adjustments have been as follows:

Year Index Increase actually awarded
per cent. per cent.
1982 5.42 4.97
1983 4.81 3.50
1984 3.79 3.00
1985 4.39 4.39
