HC Deb 04 March 1985 vol 74 cc342-3W
Mr. Simon Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the estimated annual loss of rents from public sector empty dwellings in Greater London and in each of its component boroughs and the City in each of the last six years.

Sir George Young

On the basis of information provided by local authorities in their housing subsidy claim forms, the figures for 1980–81 to 1984–85 are set out as follows. They take no account of the cost of housing benefit which would have been payable to tenants. Information for earlier years is not available.

1980–81 1981–82 1982–83 1983–84 *1984–85
£ £ £ £ £
Sutton 257,186 196,940 174,385 210,270 270,900
Waltham Forest 248,346 487,609 485,563 489,137 514,000
TOTALS 18,369,849 23,935,595 26,949,835 29,018,013 27,898,107
* 1984–85 figures are local authority estimates.

Mr. Simon Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the estimated annual loss of rates from empty dwellings in (i) the private sector and (ii) the public sector in each of the boroughs in Greater London and in the City of London in each of the last six years.

Mr. Waldegrave

The estimates total annual loss of rates on collection for each local authority is published by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy in its annual publication 'Rate Collection Statistics' (the latest edition relates to 1982–83). Separate figures for private and public sectors are not available centrally.
