HL Deb 04 March 1985 vol 460 c1198WA
Lord Sandys

asked Her Majesty's Government:

For each year since 1978–79, together with whatever projections they have for future years, what is spent in cash and real terms,

  1. (a) in total and per child on primary, secondary and all schools;
  2. (b) in total and per full-time student on non-advanced further education and how those figures would be affected were other educational initiatives such as the Micro-Electronic Programme and the Technical and Vocational Education Initiative to be taken into account.

The Earl of Swinton

The information requested has been drawn from annual White Papers on public expenditure (Cmnd. 9143 and Cmnd. 9428); it relates to the United Kingdom. The figures include expenditure incurred by local education authorities on work-related further education which will from 1985–86 be funded by the Manpower Services Commission. They exclude expenditure on the Technical and Vocational Education Initiative, which began in 1983–84, and on the Micro-Electronics in Education Programme, which began in 1980–81. The addition of expenditure under these programmes would raise unit costs by at most £12 per pupil per annum.
