Mrs. Clwyd

asked the Secretary of State for Defence whether those members of the American National Guard on exercise in the United Kingdom in 1984 were members of (a) the Air National Guard and (b) the Troop National Guard, respectively.

Mr. Lee

Members of both the Air National Guard and Army National Guard took part in exercises in the United Kingdom in 1984.

asked the Secretary of State for Defence which units of the British armed forces the American national guardsmen were working with whilst in the United Kingdom in 1984.

United States Army national guardsmen took part in general infantry training exercises with units of the Territorial Army, and US air national guardsmen, practised ground handling of aircraft at RAF Wethersfield and guarding of aircraft at RAF Abingdon.

asked the Secretary of State for Defence whether American national guards officers were involved in exercises or other activities with his Department's military police or civil police personnel in 1984.

United States Air national guardsmen took part in a one day base security exercise at RAF Abingdon, with members of the station's RAF security police.

They were involved in routine military training, in order to practise their war roles in support of NATO.
