Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs at what time and on what day the Foreign and Commonwealth Office first learnt of the press conference held in Lima by President Belaunde Terry on 2 May 1982 at which he announced that Britain and the Argentine had agreed to cease hostilities and were studying proposals formulated by the United States Secretary of State.

The Peruvian President's press conference started at 1800 peruvian time (2300 GMT) on 2 May 1982. Her Majesty's ambassador in Lima's telegram reporting it was sent at 0144 GMT on 3 May 1982. The Peruvian President announced proposals, but no agreement.
