§ Mr. Tony Banksasked the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State answering in respect of the Arts if he will give a breakdown of his calculations of 1983–84 Arts spending by the Greater London council and the metropolitan county councils upon which he based the extra funds to be made available to the Arts Council in 1986–87.
§ Mr. WaldegraveFrom the information then available to us, and which I supplied to the hon. Member in reply to his question on 24 October 1983 at columns27–28, the total budget estimates for the performing arts, film and museums in 1983–84 by the GLC and the six metropolitan county councils were £31,843,000 broken down as follows:

After adjusting for prospective future revenue and capital expenditure on certain major projects then in course of development, and for inflation, the total estimates were equivalent to about £38 million in 1986–87 terms. Some £4 million of this represented provision for essentially local activities for which the successor borough and district councils could reasonably be expected to take responsibility. Of the announced £34 million additional central funding, £16 million is allocated to the Arts Council for the performing arts, £17 million is for museums and £1 million for film.
