Mr. Andrew F. Bennett

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the average cost per pupil in (a) nursery schools, (b) nursery classes, (c) primary schools, (d) secondary schools and (e) special schools.

Mr. Dunn:

The information as requested is given in the following table. It relates to 1983–84, the latest year for which firm figures are available.

designed to be of lasting value; that most should continue to study a foreign language in years four and five of secondary school; and that a second foreign language should be offered to those pupils who can benefit from it. These issues will be considered further in the policy statement on foreign languages which we propose to issue later this year.

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) how many pupils in state schools in the United Kingdom learn Japanese;

(2) how many pupils in United Kingdom state schools learn languages other than European ones; and how many learn each language.
