§ Mr. Andrew F. Bennettasked the Secretary of State for Scotland what discussions he has had with the North of Scotland Hydro Electric Board about the proposed electricity power lines running over Skye, as part of the scheme to supply the outer islands with mainland electricity; and if such lines will require planning approval.
§ Mr. Allan StewartI have not discussed the proposed lines across Skye with the hydro board. The board would require the consent of my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Scotland under section 10(b) of the schedule to the Electric Lighting (Clauses) Act 1899 for the erection of such a line and no such application has yet been received. Prior consultation with the planning authority is required by statute and the Secretary of State's approval would carry permitted development status under the Town and Country Planning (General Development) (Scotland) Order 1981.
§ Mr. Andrew F. Bennettasked the Secretary of State for Scotland what discussions he has had with the North of Scotland Hydro Electric Board about alternative means of supplying electricity to the outer isles, which do not involve power lines going over Skye; and what are the expected energy needs of the outer isles.
§ Mr. Allan StewartIn the course of the 1984 investment and financing review I accepted the board's case for the inclusion in its capital programme of the installation of a submarine cable to the Western Isles, in view of the expected savings compared with diesel generation. Forecasts of future electricity demand in its area are the responsibility of the hydro board.
