HC Deb 24 June 1985 vol 81 cc311-2W
Mr. Pawsey

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many people are now employed in the Coventry travel-to-work area; and how that figure compares with each month since the new travel-to-work areas were established.

Mr. Alan Clark

I regret that the information is not available. Comprehensive employment statistics for local travel-to-work areas are not available except for dates when censuses of employment are taken. Censuses have been taken triennially since 1978 and the latest results are for September 1981. At that time, there were 215,000 employees in employment in the Coventry and Hinckley travel-to-work area.

More up-to-date employment figures for travel-to-work areas will become available following the publication of the 1984 census of employment early in 1986.

Mr. Pawsey

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many people are now employed in the Rugby local authority area; and how that compares with each month for the last year.

Mr. Alan Clark

Employment statistics for local authority areas are not available except for dates when censuses of employment are taken. The latest available figures are from the 1981 census of employment and show that 31,300 employees were employed in the local authority district of Rugby at that time. Estimates from the following September 1984 census are not yet available.

Mr. Tony Banks

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many people under the age of 21 years in (a) Slough, (b) Windsor and (c) Bracknell have never had a job since leaving school.

Mr. Alan Clark

The following information is in the Library. The table shows, for the Slough, Windsor and Bracknell jobcentre areas, the number of unemployed claimants aged 18 years and younger who have not had a job since leaving full time education. No information is separately available for those aged 19 and 20 years.

Unemployed school leavers aged 18 and under—9 May 1985

Windsor 3
Bracknell 71

Mr. Tony Banks

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many people under the age of 25 years have been unemployed for (a) between six months and one year, (b) between one year and two years and (c) over two years in the Slough travel-to-work area.

Mr. Alan Clark

The following information is available in the Library. On 11 April 1985, the latest date for which an analysis of unemployment by age and duration is available, in the former Slough travel-to-work area 580 claimants under 25 years of age had been unemployed for between six months and one year, 278 for between one year and two years, and 186 for over two years.
