HC Deb 24 June 1985 vol 81 cc309-10W
Mr. Lord

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many examining boards in England and Wales are currently setting examinations for GCE A-level and O-level, and CSE examinations; and what steps are being taken to reduce the number.

Mr. Dunn

Currently eight boards set GCE A and O-level examinations and 12 set CSE examinations. The new GCSE examinations, which are to replace O-level and CSE from 1988 onwards, will be administered by five groups of GCE and CSE boards.
