HC Deb 24 June 1985 vol 81 cc306-7W
Mr. Andrew F. Bennett

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what contribution was made by the United Kingdom to the European University in Florence in the latest financial year; how many students attended the university; how many of those students were British; and what was the expenditure per student.

Mr. Dunn

The contribution of the United Kingdom to the European University Institute was £779,000 in the financial year 1984–85. The EUI is a wholly postgraduate institution whose international staff pursues programmes of research into European topics in the social and human sciences. These activities also provide both a framework of support for the preparation of individual doctoral theses and a forum for seminars and colloquia in which outstanding European scholars participate. The national contributions do not therefore relate solely to the support of individual doctoral students and there is no basis on which a meaningful unit cost per student could be derived. The total number of such students is 159 in the academic year 1984–85, of whom 21 are British citizens.
