asked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will report the progress to date made by his energy efficiency office.

I am delighted that all the indicators show that our energy efficiency campaign is a great success.

  • Energy savings under the energy efficiency demonstration scheme have shown an increase of 33 per cent;
  • Applications for extended energy survey grants have nearly doubled;
  • Over 100,000 homes have now been treated under the voluntary insulation projects scheme;
  • Provisional figures would appear to indicate that over the past year improvements in energy efficiency in Britain compare very favourably with those in many of our main industrial competitors.
