HC Deb 24 June 1985 vol 81 c294W
Mr. Hardy

asked the Secretary of State for Energy how many employees of the National Coal Board have accepted reduncancy or will enter early retirement; and how many have otherwise left the industry since 1 January 1985.

Mr. David Hunt

I understand from the National Coal Board that between 1 January 1985 and 8 June 1985 the numbers of men on colliery books leaving the industry have been as follows:

Number
voluntary redundancy 6,134
other voluntary causes 1,321
early retirement 302
other involuntary causes 1,539

Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Energy (1) whether he has any conveniently available information as to how many of the miners who have taken redundancy have found alternative employment;

(2) whether he has any conveniently available information as to how many of the 43,102 miners who have taken redundancy have found alternative employment.

Mr. David Hunt

No, nor do I know where the figure of 43,102 comes from. It must be a figure covering a number of past years.
