§ Mr. RifkindThe official Soviet version of the events surrounding the reported death of Mr. Wallenberg is contained in a note handed by the then Deputy Minister Gromyko to the Swedish ambassador in Moscow in 1957. This stated that Mr. Wallenberg had died of a heart attack in Lubianka prison in 1947; that all documents relating to the case had disappeared except for a handwritten report by the head of the prison medical service; and that a Minister for State Security, executed in the mid-1950s, had previously misled the Soviet Foreign Ministry about Mr. Wallenberg's presence in the Soviet Union and his alleged death. All subsequent inquiries have been answered by reference to this note.
