§ Dr. Twinnasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if the Standing Committee on crime prevention has considered the case for encouraging better lighting in inner city areas; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Giles ShawAt the request of the Home Office standing conference on crime prevention, the British Standards Institution is preparing a guide for architects and planners on the security of buildings. The first chapter, which is to be published and widely disseminated later this year, will include advice on lighting as a preventive measure. The Institution of Public Lighting Engineers has agreed to inform the Home Office crime prevention unit of any projected major new lighting schemes in inner city areas so that the possibility of evaluating their effect on street crime can be considered.
