§ Mr. Meacherasked the Secretary of State for Social Services what action he intends to take in response to the report on "Unemployment, Health and Social Policy" by the Nuffield centre for health service studies, a copy of which has been sent to him; and if he intends to implement its proposed policy changes, at nil extra cost, to improve the health of the unemployed.
§ Mr. John PattenWe are aware of the report. We do not accept that the measures it proposes involve nil extra cost. Our priority is to continue to pursue policies to bring down unemployment and to continue to meet the health needs of the population, whatever their cause.
