HC Deb 06 June 1985 vol 80 c198W
Mr. Best

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what plans are envisaged for the location of possible future nuclear waste depositories in Wales; and what geological work has been carried out to date.

Mr. Wyn Roberts

It is the task of the Nuclear Industry Radioactive Executive to identify and develop disposal facilities for low and intermediate level radioactive wastes in the United Kingdom.

NIREX is currently giving priority to seeking at least two possible sites, in addition to Elstow in Bedfordshire, for a near-surface facility for shorter-lived wastes and is expecting to report later in the year. Any detailed geological investigations to confirm the suitability of the chosen sites will follow the procedure announced by my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Environment on 24 January 1985 at column 1146.
