HC Deb 03 June 1985 vol 80 cc56-7W
Mr. Wainwright

asked the Secretary of State for Employment, at the most recent count, how many youth training mode A schemes had trainees amounting to less than 75 per cent. capacity; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Morrison

I regret the information is not available in the form requested. However, it is estimated that at the end of the 1984–85 year, in March 1985, around 70 per cent. of approved mode A places were occupied nationally. The level of occupancy of mode A schemes in 1984–85 was good, peaking at 80 per cent. nationally in October 1984. One hundred per cent. occupancy is difficult to attain given that young people may enter or leave at any time and that it is necessary to provide a range of provision to satisfy young people's training needs.

Time spent on Scheme
Percentage
Weeks
0–13 14–26 27–39 40–47 48–52 All leavers
In full-time work with same employer 5 11 20 25 40 31
In full-time work with different employer 30 31 30 38 26 28
On full-time course at college/training centre 8 6 5 4 3 4
Back at school 3 1 1
On another Youth Training Scheme 23 10 2 1 1 5
Doing something else 3 3 3 3 3 3
Unemployed 28 39 39 29 26 28
Percentage of all respondents 15 5 6 8 67 100

This shows that those young people who stay longer on the scheme are more likely to get a job.
