§ Mr. Meadowcroftasked the Secretary of State for Social Services, pursuant to the reply of 17 April, Official Report, column 215, if he will break down the figure of £170 million per annum cost to the NHS of diseases to which smoking is a major contributory factor into the cost of (a) inpatient treatment (b) outpatient and inpatient treatment and (c) family practitioner services.
§ Mr. John Patten[pursuant to his reply, 23 May 1985, c. 546-47]: The figure of £170 million is the estimated cost to the National Health Service of illnesses to which smoking is a major contributory factor. About 85 per cent. of the total is attributable to outpatient and inpatient treatment and 15 per cent. to consultations with general practitioners.
