HC Deb 03 June 1985 vol 80 c110W
Mr. Meadowcroft

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services, pursuant to the reply of 17 April, Official Report, column 215, if he will break down the figure of £170 million per annum cost to the NHS of diseases to which smoking is a major contributory factor into the cost of (a) inpatient treatment (b) outpatient and inpatient treatment and (c) family practitioner services.

Mr. John Patten

[pursuant to his reply, 23 May 1985, c. 546-47]: The figure of £170 million is the estimated cost to the National Health Service of illnesses to which smoking is a major contributory factor. About 85 per cent. of the total is attributable to outpatient and inpatient treatment and 15 per cent. to consultations with general practitioners.
