HC Deb 03 June 1985 vol 80 cc75-6W
Mr. Corbyn

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what communications Her Majesty's Government have had with the Chilean authorities about the case of Pedro Fernandez Lembach; what information he has as to the conditions in which he is living at present; whether he has been visited by embassy staff; and whether there have been any developments in the prisoner's application for his sentence to be commuted to one of exile.

Mr. Renton

As Sr Fernandez Lembach is a Chilean national we have no formal standing to intervene with the Chilean authorities on his behalf nor any right of access to him. But we have made clear to them that if Sr Lembach's sentence were commuted to one of exile, we would issue him with a United Kingdom visa. The Chilean Ministry of Justice has informed Her Majesty's ambassador in April that it is not yet prepared to consider commuting Sr Lembach's sentence.
