HL Deb 30 July 1985 vol 467 cc261-2WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What further steps they propose to take in the light of the Soviet Union's rejection of British requests to carry out marine research in the water column in the Soviet Exclusive Economic Zone in the course of tracing the route of caesium escaped from Sellafield and whether they have approached the International Atomic Energy Agency about it.

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Baroness Young)

We intend to take the matter up within the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea, which is a more appropriate channel than the International Atomic Energy Agency. Her Majesty's Embassy at Moscow is also being asked to raise the matter with the Soviet authorities when a suitable opportunity arises.
