HC Deb 26 July 1985 vol 83 cc777-8W
Mr. Ron Davies

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what is the average wage rate among young people participating in youth training scheme programmes in mid-Glamorgan and the Caerphilly constituency respectively.

Mr. Nicholas Edwards

A standard allowance of £26.25 per week is currently paid to all participants in the youth training scheme. Information is not available on the extent to which in addition sponsors may be subsidising this allowance.

Mr. Ron Davies

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what percentage of young people leaving youth training scheme programmes in mid-Glamorgan and the Caerphilly constituency, respectively, find permanent employment at the latest available date.

Mr. Nicholas Edwards

Information is only available at Manpower Service Commission area office level. The results of a sample survey of youngsters who left youth training schemes in mid and south Glamorgan between July and September 1984 showed that 44 per cent. went into full-time employment.

Mr. Ron Davies

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what has been the cost of the youth training scheme in mid-Glamorgan and the constituency of Caerphilly, respectively, in each year since its inception.

Mr. Nicholas Edwards

The information is only available at Manpower Services Commission area office level. The operational cost of the youth training scheme excluding administration in mid and south Glamorgan is as follows:

£ million
1983–84 6.641
1984–85 14.553
* 1985–86 3.924
* To end June.

Mr. Ron Davies

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what is the take-up rate among relevant age groups of the youth training scheme in mid-Glamorgan and the Caerphilly constituency, respectively.

Mr. Nicholas Edwards

It is not possible, given the difficulty of defining the potential client population to give accurate take-up rates. The Manpower Service Commission's programme for 1985–86 estimates that 4,195 16-year-olds, 537 17-year-olds and 192 older youngsters will enter the youth training scheme in raid-Glamorgan. By the end of June, 1,059 16-year-olds and 28 17-year-olds had entered the scheme. No older youngsters were undergoing training. Of those in training, 284 16-year-olds and 417-year-olds were in the Rhymney Valley. No information is available for the Caerphilly constituency.
